In a world where we spend more and more time in front of screens, vision problems have become a growing concern, especially amongst children and teenagers.
One of the visual conditions that has increased the most in recent decades is myopia. This problem not only affects distance vision, but can also become a serious risk to long-term eye health. Myopia is caused by excessive elongation of the eye, which increases the risk of irreversible long-term eye damage. Can you imagine your child waking up every morning and seeing clearly without the need for contact lenses? What if you could also slow the progression of your child’s myopia without the need for medication or surgery?
At Ockio, this is already a reality thanks to an effective, scientifically based treatment: orthokeratology or Ortho-K.
Myopia: a silent pandemic
Myopia is a refractive error that causes objects at a distance to appear indistinct and blurry. Whilst the issue can be easily rectified by wearing glasses or contact lenses, the underlying problem resides in the progression of the condition. This condition affects millions of people worldwide and is emerging as one of the primary causes of long-term vision loss. The prevalence of myopia among children is increasing, with the progression of this condition often exhibiting a yearly increment. Should this be left unchecked, it has the potential to progress rapidly and increase the risk of serious eye complications. These include, but are not limited to, retinal detachment, glaucoma, myopic macular degeneration and premature cataracts. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), it is estimated that by 2050, half of the world’s population will be short-sighted. Consequently, the management of myopia has transitioned from a mere option to a necessity.
What is orthokeratology?
Orthokeratology is a personalised treatment that involves the use of contact lenses specially designed to be worn only at night, with no discomfort or inconvenience. During sleep, these lenses gently adjust the surface of the cornea to correct myopia. The result is that when you wake up and remove the lenses, you can see perfectly throughout the day. In addition to offering visual freedom, orthokeratology has been the subject of scientific studies which have proven its effectiveness in slowing the progression of myopia, especially in children and adolescents, in whom this growth can be very rapid. Orthokeratology is an ideal treatment for children because it can be used safely from the age of 6 or 7. In fact, the earlier myopia is detected and treatment is started, the better the results. It is also an excellent option for adolescents and young adults with stable prescriptions who are looking for a comfortable and safe alternative to daily contact lenses or laser surgery, as it is a completely reversible procedure.
