Bernhard Naumann, also known as Blechmann in the customization world, presents his version of the BMW R 18.
A strong character needs a strong name and “Blechmann” is as strong a name as metal. It is also the nickname of Bernhard Naumann, a well-known Austrian builder.
Together with BMW Motorrad, it presents its latest creation: the Blechmann R 18.
With the new BMW R 18, BMW Motorrad presented the brand’s first series motorcycle for the cruiser segment in April 2020. This model represents like no other BMW motorcycle the tradition of the historic BMW motorcycles, both technically and in terms of his design. It is based on illustrious models such as the BMW R 5 and focuses once again on the essence of motorcycles. Reason enough for Bernhard Naumann to change the chassis and technology as little as possible and use only the original anchor points to create the Blechmann R 18.
The Blechmann R 18 in detail
When starting with a new creation, Bernhard Naumann never does the sketches before. He gets inspired while working on the bike itself. “I draw my design directly onto the object using the final material. This allows me to respond directly to the requirements and monitor the proportions at all times, ”explains the designer.
In the case of the Blechmann R 18, it initially “put the cart before the horse” in order to be able to correctly assess the proportions of the front fairing. The sporty single-seater is based on the original support structure of the rear fender, saddle and passenger. The rear light is from Kellermann. The fuel tank has been extensively modified: On the one hand, it is narrower, which makes it more sporty and exposes the engine even more. On the other hand, it has cuts in the knee area, which highlight the athletic line even more. The original head tube was used as the base for the handlebars.
Next, Blechmann customized the headlights. As on his latest custom BMW “Giggerl” motorcycle, a conversion of the BMW R 9T, the headlights were to have a subtle kidney-shaped design. Analogous to the classic boxer engine, Blechmann placed a filament lamp in the center.
Here too, the steering angle and the forward-sloping headlight determine the basic design of the custom bike. Bernhard Neumann refined personalization with understated black paintwork and classic BMW Motorrad white stripes. Together, the team around Blechmann worked 450 hours on their version of the BMW R 18.
Defining customization
Blechmann does not perceive his work as that of a classic customizer. “My work begins by removing parts of the original version until there is a blank canvas. As construction progresses, the design develops. I call it a “Blechmann-style rapid prototype,” says the builder. This is what makes your workshop unique.
Mainly, Blechmann works only on its craftsmanship and design. If necessary, receive support from specially chosen professionals. “You cannot do anything in this world on your own. I am more than happy to have a reliable staffing infrastructure. “
